When I photographed him in the summer, I felt it was important to capture him with the elements he has devoted much of his life to. The garden, the music, and the outdoors. I have rarely made a portrait that asked so little of its subject and revealed so much.

The sitting took place over a single afternoon in the East Texas Piney Woods area, in the afternoon overcast sky and warm, humid air. Three frames survived from the session; this one was selected for print and has remained my favorite ever since.
